The big thing I've been thinking about in education lately is how it will affect music and the "electives". Right now I think a good approach to the whole thing is trimesters as long as band is considered a full year course. A lot of other band directors are against it and I'm not sure, they never really give any reason, they just complain.

I've never played an instrument, and I've never really considered the ways that technology can effect music. Are there certain devices that are available to you, as an educator? Are there any "cool tools" that are available to the students? Besides the amplifiers, speakers, etc., is there anything out there that someone as clueless as me might find interesting? I'd love to hear about it, if there are any.
Why do you think the trimester would work better for a year long band course? I held a long-term substitute position at the end of last year in orchestra. I have no opinion regarding semesters vs. trimesters. I am curious why you think trimesters would be more beneficial than semesters. Would you feature different playing ensembles each trimester? Or maybe different genres of music could be played each trimester, for example baroque music for one trimester, romantic during another, and jazz during the last trimester.
You know--I was in Band and I actually liked it and had fun marching! Too bad that when it came time for my Senior year--our band instructor no longer cared about how well we played (due to the fact that he really need to retire at that time). I played the clarinet since I was in fifth grade-then continued in Band all the way through High School. To tell you the truth--I don't think that if I picked up a clarinet today--I don't think I would be able to play! But, who knows--maybe I could. I really wish that we had the technology back then that we do now in the classrooms--we might have been a better class if we had something of that nature!
